Just the other day I asked one of my associates for questions that college kids have about the real world and one question stood out ... How do college students find work after college? It;s easy you just apply, that's it right? Nope there's a little more to it and that's what this post is about. So let's dive in to tonight's post.

   The first thing that is important in job searching after graduation is finding a job that will be beneficial for the seeker. Josh, why do we have to find a job that will benefit us, we just need some income. That is true as long as a job pays you I recommend taking it, but listen. You have to view your first job as you would a college course. You must use it to better yourself, use it to build your skills. But Josh, I'm working at a fast food restaurant. Perfect, you get to experience how powerful a well implemented system affects a business. McDonald's is an excellent example on the power of a proven system because no matter where you go in the world the Big Mac taste exactly the same. Another great thing about working in fast food is that you can learn how to interact with clients face to face. See what I did there? Most people would have seen a dead end job but I listed two benefits, because you have to go into each job with an empty cup.

   My first real job in college was working as a computer technician at Circuit City. Most of the younger generation probably have never heard of Circuit City, it was basically similar to Best Buy. Working for this company taught me how to wear different hats. The store I worked at was one of the largest stores in the country and we were constantly under staffed. Even though I was a technician, I was often found helping out in other departments. I sold computers, mp3 players, ipods, televisions and even digital cameras. Instead of complaining to management and telling customers I didn't work in that department; I decided to make it work. Whenever there was downtime I read up on the specs of all of our products and made sure I knew everything we sold. Sounds meticulous but I was able to sell more Archos players and Zunes than anyone else. Later in life I learned Marc Cuban did the same when he started selling software in his first job. How can you sell a product you know nothing about.

   Now that I changed your mentality in regards with your first job let me answer a more important question.... How do I get hired? That is all dependent on how hungry you are for the job. You need a resume, but Josh I have no previous work experience. Well that's why you have to help make your resume stand out. You need to find a way to increase your value, I used to volunteer at my local parish. I taught Sunday school, and also volunteered during mass. By doing so I was able to present a letter of recommendation from the parish, but that's not all I did. During high school, I volunteered my time by joining the IT program. You don't have to volunteer at a church or at your school you can think out the box. If you want to join a marketing agency, why don't you offer to handle the marketing for your local mom and pop business for free. Build a portfolio, just like photographers do. But Josh, I want to get a job in sales. Then sell something, numbers speak for themselves. Buy something cheap then resell it, that's not an idea I created; I heard it from Gary Vee. We have to make opportunity happen for us rather than to us.

   We know how the saying goes, God only helps those who help themselves. All I really wanted to say in this post that you just have to think outside of the box. Be yourself and just try your best because we don't always get hired for a job.
