January 5th 2018 Learning From Alvin Toffler

Today's post is inspired from a random video I found while listening to some audios on YouTube. That video was the first time I heard of Mr Toffler and his book Future Shock sounds like a good read. But that isn't what I'm writing about today. I'm taking a look at one of his most famous quotes, so let's dive in.

The quote is "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." That is more than a mouth full but I can honestly say that this quote is 100% true. The year right now is 2018 and you can make millions of dollars without a college degree. Traditional education is no longer as powerful as it once was, it has been replaced by one thing. The thing that has replaced traditional education is Adaptability. The definition of adaptability is the quality of being able to adjust to new conditions. In my honest opinion adaptability is what Mr. Toffler was referring to. We have to be able to adapt to the way the world is moving. The biggest trend in the past decades are smartphones, if you are between the ages of 21 and 40 then more than likely have a smartphone. If you have not adapted to this trend then you are considered illiterate. Sounds horrible but hold your thoughts until the end of the post.

Why are you considered illiterate for not having a smartphone because you are hurting yourself in the long run. A smartphone has made gps, laptops, payphones, portable game consoles, camera and more obsolete. Smartphones have become an essential part of our lives and there's no denying this fact. Why am I talking about smartphones in a post about adaptability? The reason why is because we have learned to use smartphones while at the same time unlearning how to use older technologies such as a fax machine. But by relying on these smartphones we forgot how to interact with people . Because of this services like tinder are thriving. The reason why services like tinder are thriving is simply due to the fact that it has made the act of communicating easier. This has made us worse at socializing in person and created a marketplace for services like meetup. Meetups help us relearn how to interact socially with people.

This quote applies to much more than smartphones. It applies to our jobs, if we fail to adapt to the new systems or rules we won't be there long. Look at Circuit City they failed because they failed to adapt. Big stores such as Macy's and JC Pennys are closing stores yet Amazon is opening stores. Why? Because Amazon is no illiterate and have unlearn what doesn't worked and relearned the power of brick an mortar.  This quote is that so powerful that half a century later it came true. This post wasn't a super big post to change your way of thinking. It's just to enlighten you.
