March 21st, 2018 The Frog and the Scorpion

Yup it's been a little over a month since my last post, but today's post will make up for it. Today's post was inspired by the show Smallville. In one episode Lionel Luthor tell his son Lex the story of the frog and the scorpion. The story seemed pretty interesting so let's talk about it.

So before I give my interpretation let me first tell you guys the story. The story goes as follows: "A scorpion asks a frog to carry it across a river. The frog hesitates, afraid of being stung, but the scorpion argues that if it did so, they would both drown. Considering this, the frog agrees, but midway across the river the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both. When the frog asks the scorpion why, the scorpion replies that it was in its nature to do so."  A sad story that tells you that no matter what we do, we can't change our nature. The purpose of this post is to see if I believe this to be the case. For those of you who do not wish to read this whole post for my answer, I say the story is both true and untrue. Yup like always, I can't give a definitive answer.

Let's talk about why I disagree with the story, people can change. I am not the same person I was ten years ago because I have changed my way of thinking. I have overcome my nature because nurture is greater than nature. The people who were in my inner circle changed my mentality which is why they say your income is the average of your five closest friends. If I let my nature dictate the way I lived my life, I wouldn't be here. I have a couple of family members and friends who used their nature as an excuse for their situation. They never graduated from high-school and they haven't done anything with their lives.

So Josh, you say that you can overcome your nature then how can the story still be true. Take a look at money, there is a famous saying about it. Money is said to bring out a person's true nature. It's the same with guns, they don't kill people; people do. Like I mentioned earlier I have family members and friends who used their nature as a crutch. It's sad but true, not everyone has the ability to overcome their nature. If you don't believe me listen to the song "In the Ghetto" by Elvis. But at the same time listen to Oprah's backstory she overcame her "nature" to become the Oprah we know today. That's exactly why the answer isn't straightforward.
