March 18th 2019 Always Be Yourself By Bruce Lee
Josh and Joshettes, I had to bring out another teaching from the master himself Bruce Lee. I had to bring this up because of a phone call I just had. So get ready to learn from the master himself as told through my writing.
The entire teaching is “Always be yourself; express yourself; have faith in yourself.” This teaching means exactly what it says. Don’t change who you are as a person because you are who you are. Sounds confusing when I say it like that but you get the gist. This sounds like common knowledge yet many people purchase self-help books. People often feel that they aren’t enough. Sounds super harsh but hear me out. There are people who feel they have to look a certain way in order to please people. Don’t believe me, look at people who suffer from anorexia and bulimia. Marisa Peer has a career in which she helps people understand that they are enough. So how do you implement this teaching in your daily life? I have no idea but let me show you how I implement it in my life.
Before I do that, let me actually tell you about the phone call. I was talking to a friend of mine and was asked what is my purpose in life and how was I going to achieve it. You may not believe me but I consider myself a humble person. So instead of saying something like changing the world or making a crapload of money; I simply said my purpose in life is to bring Joy to people. For longtime readers, you know my one word is Joy (Evan Carmichael’s Your One Word), so without hesitation, I was able to answer. Why do I want to bring Joy to others? I like to help people, it’s in my DNA. So how do I plan to accomplish this, by being myself? I know you are about to stop reading this post because that sounded stupid. Yet, it’s pretty deep. I bring Joy to others both naturally and by use of my content. How can I bring Joy to others naturally? I hold open doors for people, I always say excuse me when I pass in front of people no matter what. This may not sound like anything special but you never know how people will take it. Sometimes people are going through a tough time and a random little act of kindness goes a long way. Now let’s talk about my content, how is that going to bring others Joy? I produce content so others can benefit from it, which is why I MAKE NO INCOME FROM ANYTHING OTHER THAN BOOK SALES! I produce free content with no ads, banners or hidden fees. I do everything because I like helping people, Which is why being myself allows me to accomplish my purpose.
‘Josh I’m confused, what does this have to do with this teaching?’ That’s what nearly everyone is thinking right now. The person was trying to explain that I won’t make any money doing this, so I should change my approach. This is not the first time I have heard this and won’t be the last but I refuse to change. You may call me stubborn but I believe in myself. I have to express myself and what better way than by being myself at all times. See what I did there, I used the teaching, it comes full circle. Money is great but I don’t do this for the money I do this because I like it. Producing free content allows me to hone my craft thus allowing me to produce better books. Before the call, I literally recorded a podcast explaining what sets me apart from others. I’m a blunt yet transparent person, people in my inner circle love that I tell it like it is (technically how I see it so my opinions). I listen to motivational stuff, spiritual stuff, entrepreneurial stuff and a bunch of other things and they all talk about investing in yourself. Why, because the most powerful tool you have is yourself. Which is why I stand by this teaching 100%.
We all have to be ourselves no matter what. We are all different so why try to change that. Just be yourself, don’t change who you are. You can lose weight, learn a new trade and stuff like that, just don’t change your core. You may say that I will change in the future but we don’t know that for sure. So, stick around and see if I ever change.
Remember to be successful it's your right, duty, and responsibility.
